A kitchen renovation can spread into the rest of the house before the first cupboard comes out. Boxes occupy the dining room, spare chairs block the hallway and the saucepan you need ends up under something heavy.

Storage can help you clear the working area, but the useful first step is deciding which belongings you can manage without. Plan around how your household will live during the work, rather than packing every cupboard in one go.

Agree what needs to leave the room

Ask your installer which areas must be clear and when. Include the route from the entrance to the kitchen, any adjoining dining space and places where deliveries will be unloaded. Agree where tools and materials will go so your packed belongings do not occupy the space the team needs.

Separate items you are keeping from items you have already decided to sell, donate or dispose of appropriately. Paying to move and store an unwanted chair only postpones that decision.

Make a short list of what is leaving the house. Include boxes, freestanding furniture and any equipment you are considering storing. Discuss unusual items and suitability with the storage provider before arranging transport.

Keep a small everyday kit at home

Think through an ordinary weekday. Which mugs, plates, utensils and food containers will you actually use? What do you need for packed lunches or a child’s usual routine?

Keep that small selection separate from the storage load, along with important paperwork, keys and chargers. Agree a suitable temporary food-preparation arrangement with your installer. Do not improvise connections for appliances or use equipment in a way its manufacturer does not allow.

Keep food and household cleaning products out of the general storage boxes. Ask about storage restrictions before packing anything unusual; fitting through the door does not by itself make an item suitable for storage.

Pack for a staged return

Give each box a specific contents label and a simple number. A note such as “K3: serving bowls and baking trays” is more useful than “kitchen”. Keep the matching list on your phone or with your renovation paperwork.

The Self Storage Association UK’s customer advice recommends detailed labels and placing belongings you expect to need nearer the entrance. Apply that idea to your renovation: everyday crockery may return before occasional entertaining equipment.

Use suitable packing materials and manageable box weights. Protect fragile pieces individually and avoid putting heavy cookware on top of delicate items. Check that everything is clean and fully dry before packing. If you are moving furniture too, see our furniture preparation guide.

Check appliances before moving them

An appliance that looks ready to move may still need preparation. Follow its manufacturer’s transport and storage instructions, and arrange appropriate help for disconnection and handling. Do not assume the same approach suits every fridge, dishwasher or small electrical appliance.

All our containers are outdoor 20ft drive-up units. Discuss items with particular temperature or humidity requirements before booking; do not assume an outdoor container provides controlled conditions. Ask us to confirm relevant dimensions if a piece needs a precise fit.

Customers bring their own padlock and arrange insurance for their belongings. Check the arrangements for transport as well as storage with your insurer.

Bring belongings back when the room is ready

Ask the installer when cupboards and surfaces are ready for use and when the remaining work will be finished. Returning every box too soon can make the final jobs and cleaning harder.

Plan the first collection around what you need to restart your routine. Leave enough time for loading, travel and unloading. Customer access at Enfield Lock is 6am–7pm daily.

Keep us informed as the work progresses. We require one calendar month’s notice before vacating, so discuss your planned leaving date in good time and confirm the arrangements if the renovation timetable changes. Our final-month guide explains how to prepare for collection.

Ask about storage for your renovation

Our outdoor 20ft drive-up containers cost £195 per month, billed monthly in advance. Tell us what you need to store, your expected start date and whether any items need special care. We can discuss suitability and current availability before you book transport.
